Khmer Empire

In the 7th century AD rhe rising Khmer Empire began to extend its power over the northeastern region. By the 11th century it had reached the Chao Phraya River valley. The great period of Khmer monument building commenced with the reign of Suriyavarman I (AD 1002-50).  The principal religion in the early centuries was Hinduism. which was replaced with Mahayana Buddhism by the late 12th century. Khmer power began to wane in the 13th century.
